The “Orico 2139U3” case for an external drive is delivered in a retail box of color cardboard, on which the brand name, model, the manufacturer’s contacts and the specification in Chinese and English are indicated on the back. Inside the box there is a kit … It is completed with a cable for data exchange with USB-A / USB-B connectors 3.0 version 0.5 m long, instructions in English and Chinese, a brand name card and the case itself, sealed in film. This is a popular low-cost case for an external drive: whether it’s a hard drive or an SSD. It protects only from dust and splashes. The case is made of transparent acrylic, on which the brand name is printed. A controller board with interfaces is installed inside: inside SATA-3, outside is USB 3.0, type B. This interface also supports a standard microUSB 2.0 connector, but the exchange speed over such a cable is lower. There is a variant of such a box with an USB-C output interface, but much more expensive. Besides the QR code, which I could not read from, the controller board does not have a brand logo, revision number or production date. The manufacturer in this case can be any. The case is opened by moving the halves relative to each other along the guides. I ordered the same case earlier in the GearBest store. He has a modest retail package. The controller board installed in it has a revision of R1.0 and was manufactured on July 13, 2016. The board also has brand markings. So, in front of me are 2 cases of the same brand, one model 2139U3, one price, but with an external difference in the installation of the controller boards, or rather the placement of the elements, so I propose to compare them by the speed of data exchange. For verification, I will install the 3 available hard drives in both cases. These are the models: “Toshiba MK3252GSX” with a capacity of 320 GB with SATA-2 interface, “Toshiba MQ01ABD100” with a capacity of 1 TB with SATA-2 interface. These 2 drives are 9.5 mm thick. Further, the Toshiba MQ04ABF100 also has a capacity of 1 TB, but already with a SATA-3 interface and the Silicon Power S55 SSD-drive with a capacity of 120 also with a SATA-3 interface. The last 2 drives are 7 mm thick. I will conduct testing using CrystalDiskMark 3.0.2 for the Windows 10 64-bit operating system, 3 passes each with 1 GB file recording on the Asus FX705GM-EW126 laptop when it is powered from the network. There is a blue LED for monitoring the connection, and flickering red for monitoring the communication. I put hard drives in both cases and at the same time connected to the laptop. The case with the revision board R1.0 is recognized by the operating system under the name “NS1068”. And the operating system identified the case with the no-name controller board under the name “External USB 3.0”. Results on screen. Of course, I expected to get similar speed results for both boxes for the same drive, since they have the same model, and no suffixes appear in the name. For HDD-drives, the speeds are similar, but for some reason, for an SSD-drive, the data exchange speeds are higher when it is installed in a new case. But this screenshot shows a significant difference when connected to USB 2.0 and USB 3.0 ports. This Orico brand entered the Belarusian market with its goods, and I could buy such a case in the online store of my city, but it’s 2 times more expensive, that is, for $ 14-15. Let me remind you that I got this case absolutely free. According to the technical specification posted on the brand’s official website, most operating systems support this controller installed in the case, while the capacity of the drive enclosed in the case is limited to 4 TB. The case allows you to accommodate a drive with a thickness of up to 9.5 mm, which completely occupies all the space in it, but a drive with a thickness of 7 mm keeps everything evenly tight in it, thanks to its strong contact with the SATA-3 interface.
