I dont know if someone has already asked but i'm trying to build a nikkor prime kit for my t4i (if thats even possible) I want to start off with the 50mm prime first. so I really like the 50mm 1.2 AIS but I want to wait it out before i drop 400+ on a single lens since buying old manual prime was to save money in the first place . anyways.. I'm debating on the 1.2 or the 1.4 S.C(like in this video) and i dont know if i should get a AI or not… any help?

  • Reply Dassit Fishing December 12, 2012 at 2:02 am

Do not drop 400 on vintage glass for a t4i. Wait until you understand what you need a bit more and not what other people are saying you need. Do you really think to need to be able to go up to f1.2? Trust me that 1/3rd stop of light is not needed and it's not going to make some mediocre shot that's main focus is shallow dof any more interesting.

  • Reply Dassit Fishing December 12, 2012 at 2:15 am

Not worth it it all, wait until you know what you want and not now when you're just getting what other people are saying to get.

  • Reply Dassit Fishing December 12, 2012 at 2:18 am

Trust me, the extra 1/3rd stop of light you're getting at f/1.2 isn't going to make any difference. Especially if the purpose of this perchance is wanting shallow dof.

  • Reply Image1Nation December 20, 2012 at 10:49 pm

Thanks, I got the 50mm S.C and a 28mm E ais for 180$ in really good condition. but I was hesitating on the 28mm E ais. I dont know why there is such a big price gap between the E series ais and the normal ais… I know its the built quality but any difference on results? I'm also really interested on a 24mm ais and may just sell the 28mm if there is not much difference.

  • Reply mynameisrits December 21, 2012 at 4:28 am

They're old manual focus lenses from 35mm film cameras, so no, he does say it in the video, pay attention.

  • Reply Image1Nation December 22, 2012 at 7:57 pm

Ohk so I figured out the difference between the E series ais and the ais. Was probably a bad move from my part but I got it cheap compared to the price on a 28mm 2.8 ais. I use a crop sensor (t4i) so I'm thinking of getting a 35mm 2.0 ais to take that slot instead of the 28mm. Also, should I invest on a 85mm 2.0 or a 105mm like in this video? So far I'm thinking 24mm 2.8 ais, 35mm ais, 50mm 1.4 s.c (which I already own) and my kit lens 18-135 ATM as my zoom (which I plan to upgrade to the 17-55

  • Reply Charles Tucker February 8, 2013 at 11:06 pm

I for one, do use Canon FD lenses, 28mm Ultra Wide, 35mm, 50mm, 85mm, & 135mm. I use them on my Sony Alpha A550 and my A57. A57 for video purposes. I haven't had to much of a problem with using them with the adapters with glass to focus infinity. Once I worked with them and learned the uses of the each, they have been great.

  • Reply creativefilmz February 9, 2013 at 4:40 am

  • Reply Steven Schellinger April 28, 2013 at 6:23 am

Thanks for this video. It's great and didn't realize the 50mm was that good. Might be time for my canon 50mm f1.8 to get replaced, plus I been trying to find one of these 28mm f2.8 and good to see I been looking for the right lens. I paid more for my adaptor but I bought it in a store and got to test it first. It's a dlc Mount Adaptor Nikon AI/ AF to Canon EOS. Thanks again bro.

  • Reply Steven Schellinger April 28, 2013 at 6:24 am

What kind of videos are you going to be making?

  • Reply Steven Schellinger April 28, 2013 at 6:28 am

Mount is for Canon EOS cameras and Nikon AI/ AF lenses, so T3i and T4i would work. T3i is the same camera as T4i but cheaper, so you made the right choice. T2i is the same also except no flip out lcd, which makes a big difference when shooting video.

  • Reply Matthew Connerton June 26, 2013 at 3:07 am

Nice video. I did the same thing over the last year but I did go with canon FD lenses mostly because I already had a few and was able to get some very nice fast prime ones on ebay. I am using a fotodiox with a removable glass for focus to infinity and they look pretty good. I haven't had any issues, like you said mid way, with shallow shots or planned focus, you really won't have a problem.

  • Reply Matthew Connerton June 26, 2013 at 3:07 am

The adapter I got was ~30 and I got 3 of em so I could keep them on the three lenses I use often so I could switch faster

  • Reply huehuehueheu July 2, 2013 at 6:35 pm

  • Reply Sean Cannell July 6, 2013 at 6:47 am

you can change the aperture – the lenses are Manuel – so the aperture is controlled on the lens manually.

theres now a 2nd version of the adapter your recommending but the odd thing is it's about 40 dollars cheaper. any thoughts?

  • Reply The Seed Church July 22, 2013 at 7:06 pm

Do you know of another option for a wide angle lens that goes lower than a f2.8? Such as a 35mm – something that has around a f1.4? Our church is really dark and I'd like a wide angle lens, but yet one that can let a good amount of light in. Any options?

  • Reply Damian Dodd July 29, 2013 at 12:45 am

Kabam! Avoid the $14 adapter from what I've read on Amazon.

  • Reply Damian Dodd July 29, 2013 at 12:48 am

Ya because all movies are shot handheld. IS useless on a tripod.

  • Reply Animate Every Day - Ben Gregoire July 31, 2013 at 10:27 pm

yes, is is not as needed on a stable and still tripod, but this video is about lenses for DSLR on videos, not stills; a lot of videos involve movement of the camera, and a stabilized camera movement can make a video a lot more interesting. IS is very useful for non handheld, such as dollys, jibs, and sliders.

I lean toward Minolta legacy glass to use with my A6000.  A lot of bang for your buck with them, as well as some really premium pieces.  I try them all though, and have had good success.

  • Reply Photo for a lifetime October 9, 2015 at 9:04 pm

A lens without VC or VR or IS is next to nothing in film making….I know they are cheap and all…but without any vibration control the images comes out bad. You know what they say…you get what you've paid for.
