Cura 4.0 with Cura 3.6 Layout plus Cura Profiles for Ender 3, CR-10

February 26, 2020

As you watch this, I’m actually at the
Midwest RepRap Festival. The biggest 3D printing conference in the US. But I got
two things for you today. How’d you like to make Cura 4.0 look like Cura 3.6?
I’ll show you that plus I’m gonna officially release my Cura profiles. A
lot of people have asked for them. They’re ready to go. I’ll show you both of those
on today’s Filament Friday. This episode of Filament Friday is brought to you by
these patreon supporters. In my previous Filament Friday video, I introduced Cura
4.0. I took you through all the features, but the biggest complaint is people
don’t like this drop down settings menu. They want it to look like 3.6, the
previous version. Well if you go up the marketplace and then plugins and scroll
down to Sidebar GUI, it’ll give you just that. Click on it and this will make 4.0
look like 3.6, or at least pretty close. Click on install and once it starts to
install it’s going to pop up this license agreement. Incredibly long. Read
through it if you want, then click accept and then you have to quit Cura and
restart it for it to take effect. And when it restarts this is Cura 4.0 but it
looks a lot like Cura 3.6. You’ve got your normal view your x-ray view up
here at the top, but they’re radial buttons instead of a drop down menu.
You’ve got your printer selected your profile all up here at the top just like 3.6. All the settings are permanently on the side. Slice button at
the bottom. And you click on slice you still have the same preview feature that
you do in 4.0. So you have this button at the bottom but everything else looks
very similar to 3.6. But then at the top you’ve also got the preview button. Now
the radio button, the x-ray view is right here. You click on it, you get your x-ray view
just like you did before, but no separate menu or submenu like 4.0. And then when
you click preview you automatically get the color menu here showing you all the
different features. The slider is right here on the right and the animation on
the bottom just like Cura 3.6. I think this is an awesome plugin because
it gives you the option. You can get the 3.6 look or you can stay with the 4.0. You
don’t have to pick one or the other. You can go back and forth. If you want all
the other features such as the scripts, that’s the same. The little wrench shows up. So you really have the look and feel of 3.6 but all the latest bug fixes and all
that in 4.0. I’ve been beta testing my cura profiles
within 4.0 and I’m getting pretty good results. In fact I beta tested it through
my patreon supporters. Got some great feedback, so I’m ready to release my
profiles. A lot of people have asked for them so if you want to download them, there’ll be a link in the description below. To do that go to settings>profile>manage profiles and this menu will come up. Click on import to import the profiles
and wherever you downloaded them there should be four files. 0.12, 0.2, 0.2 8 and
then a ninjaflex. And this is really designed for the EZR extruder, if you
installed that on your machine, which i’ve shown in a previous video. So I’m
gonna just remove it here because I don’t need two copies, and then they’re
ready to be used within Cura 4.0. So I’m really happy with the result I’m
getting. There’s always improvements you can make and you may have to tweak it a
little bit yourself for your machine, or your liking. I’m not saying they’re
absolutely perfect but they’re a great starting point. Here’s a really quick
example. This is my CHEP calibration cube up sized 150%. I sliced it with my point
0 2 layer height profile and here’s the results. Now those lines on the side I’m working
on that’s something in my machine but you can barely see it. The camera picks
them up but other than that this looks really good. A link to the profiles will be in a
description below if you want to download them. So that’s it for this week.
If you like what I’m doing here maybe check out some of the videos that are
popping up. Wanna help support the channel, Patreon or the affiliate links
it all helps a lot. If nothing else, clicking on the CHEP logo and subscribe. I’ll
see you next time right here the Filament Friday.

Twice I have had "critical errors" in the middle of large prints with 4.0. I believe I will stick with 3.6 with larger prints in the future.

    Cool!! See you at MRRF!

Sidebar gui ofter does not respond. You just simply can not rewrite the values. I went back to stock 4 gui.

Do you also have a Cura 3.6/4.0 profile for the Fabrikator Mini 1.5? The one on your website is for a much older version of Cura and seems to not work correctly anymore.

I have both Cura 4.0 and Cura 3.6 loaded and trying to decide which I like best. I down loaded your profiles and tried to import them to Cura 3.6 and it said that it imported but nothing loaded. I then closed Cura 3.6 and started Cura 4.0 and imported your profiles and they loaded great. Went back and tried again to import them to Cura 3.6 and it continues to say that it imported but nothing shows up. Am I doing something wrong or are those profiles for Cura 4.0 only?

  • Reply Metalluka23 March 29, 2019 at 5:28 pm

Chuck, unless it's a mechanical issue, you can eliminate those lines in the side by adjusting some slicer settings.

In your Magic0.12 profile, you have Z Seam Alignment configured for Sharpest Corner. Those lines in the side are from varying layer start positions (depending on what the slicer determined was the sharpest corner on that layer which will change depending on the geometry) and slight over-extrusion at the start of every layer or following a retraction. To better visualize where this is occurring, enable coasting, slice, and check it out in Layer View. There will be a noticeable gap in the outer shell where each layer starts.

To fix the lines on the sides on your CHEP cube, use these settings:
    Z Seam Alignment: User Specified
    Z Seam X: 100
    Z Seam Y: 100
Seam Corner Preference: Hide Seam (doesn't really seem to matter for this setting)
    Z Seam Relative: Checked

The resulting print should have a much better surface finish.

  • Reply D.W. March 29, 2019 at 5:49 pm

where can I disable the automatic slicing? It is a little bit annoying when I play Tetris with my models to fit them on the build plate.

  • Reply 3Dprinting Llama March 29, 2019 at 6:10 pm

LOL . I tried the plug in.. looks great but one thing, it covered over the "slice" button.. can't slice now . LOL

  • Reply Barinthos March 29, 2019 at 8:31 pm

I've searched all over google for a solution to my issue but to no avail, so hopefully you can help me, Chuck. I installed TH3D's EZABL about a month ago, which included the firmware flashing/upgrading and all that jazz. Everything seemed to work out great, except one thing. ANY item i print, utilizing the same profiles in Cura as before the update, will cause the printer to jitter when going in a curve. The size or angle of the curve doesn't matter. And it's totally random. One pass is jitters, another it doesn't. Location of said curve on the print doesn't matter either. Everything about it is random. When it prints along a curve, the jittering can happen. And it's only started after I updated the firmware to utilize the EZABL. Any ideas on what could be causing this?

  • Reply Calvin Burton March 29, 2019 at 9:39 pm

I am unable to load your profiles in either 3.6 or 4.o. It says they were imported but nothing loaded. Closed and restarted several times still no joy.

  • Reply Nick Anderson March 29, 2019 at 10:17 pm

Did they bring back the ability to change your filament thickness in the drop down menu? Also, in 3.6 where the hell did they hide it
I went to change it since iv swapped to a new brand of filament with a new varying average thickness but couldn't find where to change it anymore

  • Reply Barry Hagen March 29, 2019 at 11:21 pm

How do you get the animation slider? I don't have it and don't see anywhere to toggle it on.

  • Reply Belarch 1 March 30, 2019 at 2:51 am

I tried 4.0 for about a week. I liked it until I started having issues saving the gcode to a SD card. Some of the settings like bed temp or hot end temp wouldn't update when I went to do the print. I tried refreshing the SD card on my Mini, but nothing helped except saving the gcode again. I was dealing with that until it started only giving me 2 locations to save the gcode when there were actually 4. I had to go back to 3.6. Anyone else have these issues? I prefer the look of 4.0 but can't deal with the saving and re-saving on almost every print.

  • Reply Doug Johnson April 9, 2019 at 1:56 am

WTF are they thinking at Cura? They come out with new versions, but I still can't simply drag a selection box around a model, or type in numerical values for object rotation. This is basic interface usability that everyone would instantly find useful. But they're idea of an improvement is to put all the settings into a drop down menu that COVERS the "Slice" button until you close it.

  • Reply Ericcsuf April 10, 2019 at 7:38 pm

Most videos refer to 3.6 and the videos probably won't be updated. It has been very difficult to follow along using 4.0. So this plug-in has helped immensely with that.

Thanks for this video, and thanks to fieldOfView for writing the plug-in.

I like your profile's print quality (magic 0.2) over default but I can't for the life of me figure out what is causing your profile print time to skyrocket. The slicer print time is wildly off verse the actual print time which ends up being almost twice as long. Are you having this issue as well?

Have you had any problems with Cura 4.0 Line Widths? It seems like my calibration cube printed with 3.6 is pretty much spot on (0.51mm actual / 0.50mm settings) With the same flow rate calibration and other same settings my calibration cube comes out with 1.1mm thick walls. Have you seen anything like that with 4.0?

Hey Chuck i cant seem to turn off the supports for your Cura 3.6 – Ender 3 – Magic 0.28 curaprofile. Even with supports turned off it seems like supports are generated automatically.
