How To Boost Audience Retention on YouTube (In Less Than 90 Seconds)

October 10, 2019

– Boost audience retention to get more views and grow on YouTube. That’s what we talk
about today, here we go. The first thing that you need to do is a very quick hook at the start. Like I’ve just done,
telling you that your video is about the topic that they’ve just found in the title, the descriptions, the tags, and the thumbnail. If you’re very quickly able to establish that they have found the
content they are looking for, they are more likely to buy-in
and watch the rest of it. When you’ve done that,
introduce yourself quickly. The longer the intro, the
longer they have to disappear. That is why in this one
if you are regular to me, there was no intro, there was no I’m your certified expert. Just jump straight into it. Editing style, now I use jump cuts. That’s where I jump from side
to side or I zoom in and out. This entertains you a little bit more, it engages your brain a little bit more. If I’m a bit closer,
I’m a bit further away. It kind of triggers you
to think it’s interesting. B-Roll this is interesting stuff that you overlay on
top that may illustrate what you happen to be talking about. Trains, planes, automobiles,
sporting events, coffee cups. Anything that is away from
necessarily the main focus that intrigues people a little bit more. Get out, get out, once you’ve
grabbed their retention you’ve delivered what they want. You need to get out really quickly. If you start offering signals, comment down below, and how I’m gonna do this, they know you’re leaving. And if they know you’re leaving, they’ll get out before you do. So for more tips on retaining people and getting more views,
there’s a playlist up here. Go out there, start creating.

Thanks for the helpful advice Alan! I like how you go straight at it!
I've been really struggling to get subscribers and viewers at the moment. Its always disheartening when you put time and effort into something and you cant see it grow!

To each their own, but I really dislike those loud "energetic" intros and am easily put off by them. I prefer a more natural authentic way of talking. But that just might be me…

Man! Finally! I have said this many, many times. Forget the intro just jump in. This is one of those long established norms in motion picture.

I still use jump cuts quite a bit, but since I'm doing more fishing adventure videos, I can do more documentary style interviews cutting from the interview portion to the fishing portion or b-roll. The combination of jump cuts, b-roll, interview and A-roll makes for a lot of variety.

I haven’t commented in a while. loves this one, I have wanted to use some of your jump ins and outs but didn’t want to rip you off BUT since you invited it… I’ll try it in an upcoming episode.

Alan your the mannn, lol. Really liked your video, I have only had a channel for around a month and am not getting many views and only 6 subs. I`m definitely going to try out all you said on here and will let you know how it goes. There are a lot of videos on here telling you how to get more views etc but only a few work, I hope that your ideas work for me. Have a look at my videos, any advice would be appreciated. Good luck and keep doing your videos. peace.
