Gary V is literally the ONLY human being on the planet that I would have a full blown 13yr old girl at a New Kids On The Block concert meltdown if I met in person. I'm totally fine with that 😀

    My Biggest Takeaways:

Building a business/brand with social media: Contextual content at scale is what works.

The marriage between sales and branding is very real on the internet. Most people focus on one or the other.

  • Reply vonda919 February 7, 2020 at 4:40 am

Gary…you are so on point on so many levels…this particular post confirms what I have intuitively known for a long time, but it's such a hard sell to many of my clients. I started a branding and marketing agency out of the spare room of my home 22 years ago. Our team has grown to 9, and I am very proud of the company and what we have achieved. We are somewhat unique because we are predominantly an all-female team where most all of our clients are men—and their companies target men (powersports, marine and male enhancement industries). We are not prude and we are very comfortable working in these industries…and if I could toot my own horn, produce really great & creative work. This is my issue….We have one client that we have created 14 brands for his 9 companies over a span of 20 years, which now average 58 million a year. While his companies have grown exponentially and can dominate our workload, we have remained stagnant for the last 3 years. Each Manager of these companies is free to run his company as he sees fit, and in most cases they dominate their industry….so the 'sell' part is easy and therefore branding/marketing is least on their mind (virtually make money in spite of themselves). The fundamentals of good branding/marketing does not seem to coexist with selling in their world. It's a strange and hard situation to be in because my client absolutely believes in branding/marketing yet the Managers seem to look at us as a vendor/expense they would prefer not to have if given the choice. So, the manager then tries to do the work in house until the owner sees it and tells them they need to have us do the work, whereas they will then make our job difficult. What makes it even harder is that the owner gives his managers quarterly bonuses based on the performance and profits of each of his companies. When a manager wants a larger bonus, he cuts back on our Marketing services the closer he gets to his review. I can't say anything to the owner because the Manager decides how his budget is spent, and going around him could lead to us losing even more business. I'm caught in the middle and find it hard to know what to do as I see so many lost opportunities that would have resulted in tremendous ROI, or the manager blatantly chooses to ignore the owner's requests as being eccentric, which I see as insubordination or an 'Emperor's New Clothes' scenario. I am working on getting more clients to dilute this type of situation, but I would just be curious to know how you would handle it.

Housing will go thought a huge shift in that it will be more modular and different materials will be used that do not require roofs, etc to be replaced. It will be Eco Houses, etc that do not require so much repair. Companies like this one are on their way out.

Linkedin? For a family home repair business. That is wrong. The home repair business should attack localized communities. They should put up tons of yard signs, swamp the neighborhood with branded trucks, knock on every door "Your neighbor is adding new X – we are right here offering it for X off". I know you are great with hammer Gary — but that was not a nail.

Gary I’m a 41 year old father of five. I agree with you wholeheartedly. I started a e-commerce business one year ago and was able to quit my 9-5 because I did $147,000 gross sales at around 48% margin selling on eBay and amazon. It’s about where the media is underpriced and where people are paying attention. Thanks for the great content. Much respect.

The body language indicates that the husband is not fully invested in the business. The worst thing is to have a spouse/ partner who is not emphatic about your business! First 1/2 of the video, he can’t stop twitching, scratching and looking around. And dragging an unenthusiastic partner along in your business set a subtle negative energy to your hustle.
