This is a wall for controlling and securing social life You are in one of the port cities with a system of control and defense composed of a rampart birdwatch powers As well as strategic access to land and sea It’s ancient inhabitants built it on the highest point of the region with an amazing level of planning and design. The most important buildings are completely surrounded by a wall and they can only be reached by four narrow paths by land and one by sea *music* Interesting, yeah, what’s interesting? They’re miniature temples very small structures that reproduce temples to scale These constructions must have functioned as altars or offerings where left because it obviously wouldn’t have let people inside Is this what is was like when you were here–no–all roped off? Well, the first time, no…the second time, yes Oh those are turtle nests that are protected Oh look at this, this is cool –what’s that–dead live tree *music* What do you think about the Tulum ruins, April? Orlando was the swamp No Yes. Orlando’s civilized Orlando’s a swamp. They filled the whole place in in the seventies. It’s a swamp When Disney showed up. And what’s Jacksonville? That’s Georgia *music* Crazy, the first time I came here I had this whole place to myself. Oh I bet. Granted, that was a gazillion years ago. When was it? I want to you to think for a minute, what year was it? Yeah, I think the first time that I came to Tulum Was 1999. There was no one here had to take a local bus to get here, two hours–watch the puddle–it cost two or three pesos *music* Beautiful Alright, so I’ve–very nice–left you extra pillows… Oh, thank you so much There’s a blanket there Ok, great. There’s towels in the bathroom And beach towels…hot water And amazing AC! Definitely need that. Yes, you do. And it’s got a little kitchenette. What’d we pay for this? Oh, I don’t even remember Around $35 US dollars, okay Okay, perfect–give or take, I can’t remember exactly Perfect. I love the flavor you got Unusual combination I’ve never heard of chicken stuffed with chorizo before But it gives it a different flavor and it’s almost kind of like a mole sauce of some sort I Like this because it’s so different–I have not had this dish before You know after a day of adventure around And actually we have–all we had is breakfast I wonder where they get this octopus from From the ocean? But from right here? Yeah Breaking into a sweat again–yeah–getting that nice sheen…glow–t’s my farmer’s tan Mmm-hmmmmm Mmm my god, that is such good guacamole. I love guacamole that is lime-y. And that has tomatoes in it You mean lime-y and not slimey Yes, that’s what I said That’s why I said, I was like that is the way that I like it–yeah–fresh chunky avocado, chunks of tomato.
