Who Are My Business Mentors? | AskNgo

October 18, 2019

(guitar music) – [Charles] Hey guys, today’s
question comes from David. He wants to know: “Hi Charles, following
you the past few years has opened a world of
new possibilities for me. You are such a strategic thinker and a disciplined person. I want to know who are the leaders and mentors that you’ve learned from all these years.” Now, that is a great question because who you choose to follow, who you choose to get advise from, makes such a huge impact on your life. Back when I first started 10 years ago, I didn’t really have a lot of mentors to follow back in Atlanta. So I had to go online, look at videos, and I had to read a lot of books so I wouldn’t be where I am today if I didn’t learn from these people. I realised a long time ago that I don’t have all
the time in the world to make mistakes. So if someone touches a hot stove, I don’t need to touch that stove to know that it is hot for myself. So when I follow a mentor and they tell me to do something, it’s from their years of experience and I rather take the shortcut and I find that books and mentors are the easiest way to
accelerate your learning. So here’s a list of
people that I’ve followed over the past few years and a takeaway from each person. The first group of
people I’ve learned from is digitalmarketer.com. So Digital Marketer is a company that teaches people how to do online marketing. Now, I really admire the team behind it: Roland Frasier, Ryan Deiss,
and all those people. They’ve built a massive company. What I admire about this company is observing the business
models they have. They have money coming in from everywhere. They have their courses, they have their high-end masterminds, they have their conferences, Traffic & Conversion Summit, that I come to every year. But what I love about them is they could have
easily just been another internet marketing company that launches course after course after course. But they’ve really done
their best to pivot and now they sell to different companies and certify their media buyers into different aspects of internet marketing such as, you know, they’ve got stuff on e-mail marketing, paid
marketing, conversion funnels. And I also like how they branded the term. Before, it was just internet marketers. And with internet
marketers, there’s just so many different types
of internet marketers. But they’ve kind of re-branded themselves as digital marketers. So when you think internet marketers, there’s so many different types, right? But they’ve re-branded
themselves as digital marketers. And when you think digital marketer, you think someone that is a
little bit more professional, they’ve maybe done some agency work or they’re a little bit more respected than internet marketers. So I really respect those guys. The second mentor is Ramit Sethi from IWillTeachYoutobeRich.com. I’ve been following Ramit
for over 10 years now and I started following him
back when I was in college. His website was originally
a personal finance blog. So that’s what I followed him for and I stopped following
him for a few years because I wasn’t quite
into personal finance and I remember going to his website, maybe three years ago,
and I thought to myself: “Whoa, what the heck
happened to this guy?” Because I’m looking at
all the personal finance blogs I followed and a
lot of them were still doing the same thing but he transformed his company into a learning company. He took things to the next level. So I was just really curious, how did he go from where he was before, the personal finance blogger, into pretty much a teaching empire now. And I actually had the privilege to meet Ramit for an hour last year. I had coffee with him. And that one hour conversation changed my life, some of his advise that he had for me. So some takeaways I’ve gotten from Ramit is number one: his emphasis on premium and quality. So if you’re selling any products, you want to make sure, you want to invest the time, invest the money, to make sure it’s the best in the world. And sometimes you have to chase the quality over money. The next thing is he’s
such a systems thinker so because of him I’ve implemented so many systems into my company. And number three, think bigger. So he’s always challenging
you to think bigger and when I met him, and he told me he could see my company doing X, I couldn’t believe it because that number so was big but then I started reverse engineering the number. Okay, what has to change
in my business model for me to hit those numbers? And now, I can see it.
So thanks a lot, Ramit. The third person is Paul Graham from the startup accelerator Y Combinator. So, I’ve been reading Paul Graham’s essays for so many years now. So, he has this blog, you guys should follow it, we’ll put a link in the video, and on this blog, he’s just giving so much advice and some of the advice that he’s giving is stuff I’ve never heard anywhere else in the world. I mean, this guy helped, you know, he advised to AirBnB, he advised to Dropbox, so you guys should definitely follow him. Next is Tim Ferriss. So, I gotta say, Tim
Ferriss changed my life. If I didn’t read The 4-Hour Workweek, I wouldn’t be here right now. That’s how much of an
impact he’s made on me. So I read his book back in college, and he opened my eyes to, number one: You can make money on the internet. Number two: You don’t have to
work so hard to make money. Now, I’m not exactly
working four hours a week, more like 80 hours a week,
but that’s by choice. So he introduced me to
concepts of virtual assistance, building a team, delegating, outsourcing, the 80/20 principle,
hacking, learning hacks. So, Tim Ferriss has made
such a big impact on my life and he still does because I still follow his podcasts these days:
The Tim Ferriss Show. So, you guys know I’m really
into behaviour changes and real into habits. So one person who has really helped me out with that is James
Clear at jamesclear.com. So I would say before reading his blog, I was probably a B+. I had routines. I had habits but I wasn’t really batting at 100%. So, I would miss some days of habits and the reason I was so
good was just because of pure discipline and pure willpower. And I didn’t really truly know the science behind behavioural change until reading his blog. So here’s one small takeaway: I don’t exactly do my
habits every single day because some days I may
miss a meditation session. So I remember last year, I would miss a meditation session and then the next day I just wouldn’t feel
motivated to meditate again because I missed yesterday. I’m such a perfectionist. So, when I’m typing into my
habit RBG or my habit tracker, missing one day just
makes me feel really bad. And there’s this one article, he said, “Don’t miss the second day.” So, what that means is, yes, you can miss one day here and there, but you have to forgive
yourself and move on. Whatever you do the second day, you just cannot miss it, because that second day
is when the habit breaks. So, ever since then, yes, I may
miss a habit here and there, but I never miss it two times in a row. So thanks a lot, James. The next person is Neil Patel. So I started reading Neil Patel’s blog like eight years ago and like most people, I just followed him just for SEO content,
internet marketing stuff, but I actually got to meet and hang out and become good friends
with Neil last year and in the past year,
he’s helped me so much with my business, some of the behind the scenes stuff. So, I just want to say with Neil, he is one of the smartest guys I know. And he is a lot more than just SEO because he’s had multiple startups before, he’s a big advisor to different companies and he’s helped me a lot with my company’s behind the scenes such as people, the next step in growth. So, thanks a lot, Neil. So who are mentors I have
outside of internet marketing? Well, you guys should know by now that I’m a huge fan of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu so I have some mentors
in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu. The first person is Cobrinha. So Cobrinha, that’s his nickname. When I first started
Jiu Jitsu six years ago, he was one of the instructors there so this guy is one of the
greatest featherweights in history, he’s won world championships, and just being on a mat with him, seeing how hard he works,
how hard he trains, his work ethic is just
really motivational. The second person is Marcelo Garcia. Marcelo Garcia is considered the best Jiu Jitsu person in the world. And what I love about him is, number one, he’s such a humble person. For such a successful person
for him to be so humble is really inspiring. And the second thing is this guy was only life five foot seven, 180 pounds and this guy was destroying
people in open weights. He was destroying people that were like 60-70 pounds bigger than him so as a smaller guy,
that’s really motivational. And what I love about Marcelo Garcia is I’m moving to New York soon and I’m actually moving right next to his school so I can train with him. That’s something I love
about Jiu Jitsu guys, if you’re into basketball,
what are the chances that you can play with Michael Jordan or LeBron James. Very unlikely, right? But with Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, if you want to learn what it’s like to train with your heroes, you can. You can take a private lesson with them, you can train with them, you can go to their school. So that’s what I love about Jiu Jitsu. The next person is Eben Pagan. So I started Eban Pagan
like, wow, 12 years ago. So I actually started following him for dating advice back in college. I wasn’t really smooth with the ladies. So he built a $20 million a year business under the pen name David DeAngelo. And then a few years later,
he resurfaced himself as his real name, Eben Pagan, and started teaching business. So, I’ve gone through a lot
of his business courses, I’ve learned so much
about psychology from him, and how to manage people. Eben is such a smart, smart person. And the last person is someone that everyone in the world admires. He’s done a lot of great things. It’s Elon Musk. So, Elon Musk is the CEO of
Tesla, SpaceX, and SolarCity. And what I truly admire about
Elon Musk is two things: Number one, he thinks
huge. This guy is trying to get us to colonise Mars. And he proposed a hyperloop so this guy is pretty much the
modern-day Tesla, ironically. So that’s one thing I admire about him. He just really challenges me
to think bigger and bigger. And the second thing is I really admire how hard he works. So I do a lot of things. I
run my media buying company, I run Accelerator, I have the blog and the brand building and I have a lot of other
stuff going on in my life. And I always feel overwhelmed with the amount of work and stress and pressure I have on myself. But then, I think about Elon Musk. Elon Musk, man, he’s running
three different companies and I don’t know if you guys knew this: He has five kids. So, if Elon Musk can handle all this, then I surely can. So he really inspires me to
think bigger and work harder. So those are some of the people that I’ve been following the past few years. Keep in mind, I made this list in, like, one minute just for this video. There are a lot of other people that have helped me out that I admire that I just can’t fit everyone into one video. So if any of you guys are watching this, then I apologise, I still love you, it’s just time constraints. So I have a challenge for you guys. Create a list of, let’s
say, your seven mentors. People that you admire and respect. I want to make a challenge for you to step up your networking game and find a way to meet them. Because some of these
people that I’ve mentioned, I’ve actually met and
interacted with them. And I’ll tell you this: What you can learn from someone in person is 100 times better than what you can find on a video or on a blog. Because on the blog or video sometimes people gotta dumb it down or they can’t give away
their best secrets. But when you meet them in person and you can ask them a question then that’s when you get the real stuff. So I really wanna challenge you that you have all these
mentors, try to meet them. And one more piece of
advise is to have mentors for different area of your life. Here’s an example: Are you trying to be
an affiliated marketer? Then have a mentor there. Are you trying to be a body builder or compete in some kind of sport? Have a different mentor in that area. So you want to have different mentors for different areas of your life. Okay guys, I hope you enjoyed that video. If you liked it, you want more, then please like, share, subscribe. If you have any questions
you’d like my feedback on, then just put them in the comments and I’ll see if I can
shoot a video for you. (guitar music)

I loved that you shared this with us all….. THANK YOU!!!!

You have become an inspiration to many as well, my self personally. I Follow ALL your content and even try to find you on other people's channels, hoping I might catch yet another golden nugget from you with questions they ask, lol….
I also love John C's. content as well. I love watching all his YouTube videos on him actually going in and doing his keyword reach, Optimization, Campaign building, and Voluum Analytics. I really appreciate how open he is with his knowledge and sharing a portion of his research strategies.

I'm actually in the application process for HOPEFULLY getting into your 3 day Affilerator coarse. I'm hoping for the New York one you do, since I live right outside The City in CT.

I don't want to just become a great Affiliate, I want to DOMINATE the space just as you have.
My sleep schedule is So Fucked, the past 4 to 6 months from the shear fire I have to obtain all the info I can, but there is such B.S out here. I can't wait to learn QUALITY from you!!!!
I have that burning desire to just kick ass… for not just my immediate family (wife & son), but also to help retire my Mother & Step father!!!! Their time is with me is not all that long (looking at the overall picture) and I really want them to enjoy the rest of their time.

I know allot has to do with taking action…. which honestly is NOT a problem for me. I just DON'T want to start off with lousy Clickbank Products and develop any bad habits or of not knowing any better. So I'd rather just learn straight from a source such as yourself.

Thank You for ALL that you do, and I'm THANKFUL for your commitment to teach others "the way"!!!!!

    PS….. I now kNGOw!!!!!!

I feel like we think alike with regards to mentors, continual improvement/learning, so a lot of what you're saying resonates with me and validates my own thoughts. I work as a school counselor/private college counselor, so most of what I learn is focused towarrds providing the best educational content for my students. Keep up the great work!
