Why being a Professional YouTuber is the BEST & WORST JOB

February 13, 2020

good morning YouTube today honestly why
being a youtuber is both the best and worst job you can possibly imagine if
you knew the channel my name is Dan and this is my garage and we talked all
about the supercar ownership experience we do a lot of DIY work I help people
sell their cars and things like that if you have a supercar you looking to sell
it go visit my website normal guys supercar calm and you can actually list
your car for sale for free so check it out there’s all sorts of cool stuff on
the site but back to today’s topic I want to first of all start off with one
thing which is this is not meant to be like a woe is me or you know shed tears
for damn so I’m actually gonna start off at the positive side of being a youtuber
because there’s lots of good things about it so don’t take this as like me
whining I’m just presenting facts okay this is just my experience of being a
youtuber this isn’t necessarily how it is for all youtubers this is just how it
is for me so the first thing that’s really actually quite awesome about
being a youtuber is that I’m my own boss I kind of do what I want I don’t have a
specific schedule I don’t have to get up early the morning and go 9:00 to 5:00
and work for odd jobs in that respect it’s actually really kind of nice it’s a
relaxed schedule I actually usually sleep into like 7:00 sometimes even 8
o’clock I mean I also work until like 11 12 o’clock at night and pretty much
don’t take a whole lot of breaks during the day but it’s awesome and also with
that I’m doing what I want so I’m actually very passionate about cars I
love cars I’ve been dealing with cars and working on cars and all sorts of
stuff ever since I could drive so to be able to combine my passion with my job
is actually really awesome and it makes it set you’re more motivated to work
harder so I don’t really consider when I have a long day working really hard
making videos or making phone calls or doing whatever things I’m doing to make
money try to make this YouTube thing work I don’t really look at it as work
it just it’s fun and it’s kind of Awesome this also means that kind of
gets control my face if I want to have a really hard week and put in a lot of
hours I can and I can work really hard and prove some good content what that
also means is that I’m in control of my own fates so sometimes if you’re lazy or
you just need some time off there’s no one else to back me up there’s no other
person to take my place that part of it is actually kind of hard
you don’t really have sick days per se so there’s no one stepping in when I
don’t produce a video so if I don’t produce a video there’s no video going
out in that respect it’s a double edged short but ultimately I get to kind of do
what I want and it parts awesome but you’re also accounting at the mercy of
YouTube which we’ll talk about a minute what’s also been actually a side effect
of this job that I didn’t even think about when I started is you get to meet
some really incredible people both just fans of the show and also other
youtubers so I’ve met some really nice youtubers gotten to hangout them and
that’s been really fun I even got to go on some crazy cool adventures she’ll sponsored me to do some road
trips and those were absolutely epic I had a ton of fun well it’s not every day
you get to see an f50 chillin next to a Lamborghini Diablo VT I mean this alone
makes the whole trip pretty good girl I’ve gone on some amazing rallies with
some incredible people this tornado watch coming you’re gonna die okay we
got batten down the hatches we got to get these cars out of this area
flying hell out of here you’re gonna die dude dude we got the realism it the
internet doesn’t live mr. real fuckin look if we’re gonna die now this is a
real problem I suggest we Drive Hawk with all the
people Ari’s and colleges just had epically awesome times so the
experiences that come with being a youtuber can be absolutely outstanding
sometimes just surreal and I almost think is this even reality how did I
even get here which if you’ve seen my stories about that it’s it’s been a long
road it’s been kind of interesting and definitely was not planned so this was
never intentional I’d never thought to myself you know what I should become a
youtuber that was never the plan you didn’t know have been a software
developer my entire career I ended up running software companies as a chief
technology officers that’s actually obviously how I ended up being able to
afford a fry it’s not from being a youtuber to be clear so yeah there are a
ton of great things about being a youtuber I can list even more but let’s
be real you guys want to hear about the negative so let’s talk about the things
that suck about being a youtuber in first phone is it’s like being a shitty
celebrity it’s like not even like b-list celebrity it’s like
Arlis their zeal if you say your alias no no no I’m like a c-list person you
know you’re always be react yeah I don’t act I’m not on TV
I’m c-list you get all the shit that comes with being a celebrity so people
crap on you criticize you all that sort of stuff and you don’t get the money you
don’t get the fame you don’t get the recognition and you don’t get the
respect it’s really not a good aspect of it if you’re thinking of going into
YouTube because you want to be famous tell you it’s probably not gonna happen
it’s gonna suck actually it’s that part of it is crap it’s also kind of sad to
say that you’re a professional youtuber so think about how man careers in the
respect and speciation people have phrase hi I’m a
construction worker hello I’m a police officer
hi I’m a doctor hello I’m a lawyer hello I’m a software developer hey everybody
I’m a professional youtuber what what what no one really respects the concept
of a professional youtuber well correction children think it’s cool so
when people asked me what I do and I tell them I’m a professional youtuber
adults alike wait you can make money on that or how does that even work and they
get confused and ask strange questions and they’re they just look like
dumbfounded but the children are like that’s so cool oh man you’re famous
can’t take your picture it’s like do you really want 12 year old kids to be the
ones respecting your career no I hate the same it’s not my goal I don’t really
care if kids like my channel I want adults to like my channel like that’s
where the money is that that’s where like success is that it’s not having
kids follow you so it kind of sucks so another thing that’s kind of awkward
about youtubing is that there is like zero empathy for being a youtuber
anytime I possibly complain about anything
everyone’s like stop being a whiner you got it so easy and all this sorts of
stuff and it just it’s absolutely mind-blowing how much people have these
assumptions about being a youtuber the problem is everyone thinks about the
ultimate success in youtubers so they’re looking at the big big channels that
have millions of subscribers and legitimately are making millions of
dollars and those people are achieving some sort of reasonable level of fame I
am nowhere near that like I am so far away from that that it’s not even I’m a
roundoff error in these people’s channels they get more subscribers in
one day than I have in total so it’s not even like the same world we’re living in
most people assume that it’s just like that for me and it’s not especially when
it comes to me talking about how much work it is people are like oh you know
it’s can’t be that hard you’re doing what you love buck I work 80 to 90 hours
a week every week I don’t get weeks off I don’t get sick days I don’t take
vacations in fact if I want to take some time off I have to pre make videos
have to work even harder for a temporary period of time so I can have videos
going out because if you do not put out videos pretty much on a regular schedule
which for me is four times a week I’m put out four videos a week my channel
gets its ass kicked so I have to constantly do that so like this is
constant pressure this constant crush for getting content out and it’s also
another problem is you casually have to think about what is new and exciting
content that’s gonna get people interested and it’s hard I’ve done over
a thousand videos at this point so thinking of new topics or interesting
things or whatever that so I get people to want to watch and want to click on my
videos is challenging and that brings up another point which is you’re only as
good as your last video people are brutal and if I put out a bad video poof
they’re gone and I can’t tell you how many times people will comment stuff
like Oh something I like unsubscribing you know it’s just like let’s ignore the
other 400 videos of mine that you liked but I put out one thing and oh my god
it’s the end of the world I have to watch what I say so if you notice on my
videos I never bring up certain topics like religion politics things like that
my family I don’t ever want to bring any of that up really because it’s just not
relevant to the channel but every once in a while it accidentally slips like
you know I’m human and I can’t filter myself perfectly and considering I’ve
perused over a thousand videos four videos a week yeah occasionally you’re
gonna screw up and say something that you just it just doesn’t help the
channel okay let’s talk about pay from it everyone thinks oh you’re good and
rich off youtube I hate to tell you yeah it just isn’t happening so I’ve got
almost 50,000 subscribers now and I’m making about 2,000 bucks a month on
YouTube that’s not exactly a whole lot of money it’s not bad but for the amount
of work I’m doing the hourly rate I’m doing is probably substantially below
minimum wage yeah and I have some sponsors in sometimes occasionally I get
some actual cash payments or checks from them but the vast majority of my
sponsors provide me products so I’m not really getting paid for that I’m getting
stuff for that so it’s complicated and ultimately it’s not exactly like you’re
getting rich and to do a channel that’s about cars especially expensive cars as
you can imagine my costs are really high so that means four years in now I
yet to make a profit I am basically surviving off of my investment money
from my investor also surviving off my own money from my previous career so
that’s how I’m able to afford all this it’s not because of YouTube do you think
you’re gonna get rich and make a bunch of money probably ain’t gonna happen
and speaking of the money issue one of the things that really sucks about being
a small youtuber is I have to compete with these massive youtubers that have
huge budgets in the car world there’s some massive youtubers and they have
enough money to go and basically buy another car almost every month sometimes
they’re buying new cars like almost every week and they do these huge
projects that cost tens of thousands of dollars if not hundreds of thousands of
dollars and I can’t do that I simply do not have the budget to do that the other
problem is when you have a massive channel I have to fight against what I’m
calling the 800-pound gorillas when a big channel puts out a video let’s say
you’ve got a million subscribers and they put out a terrible video there’s
still gonna be hundreds of thousands of people that watch that video even if
it’s crap if I put out a bad video I get maybe a couple thousand views and the
problem is YouTube’s algorithm even on the crappy video for the big channel
it’s still gonna say that video got a ton of view is therefore it’s far more
important than my best video because my best videos are still getting less views
than the big channels crappy videos that means YouTube algorithm highly rewards
mediocrity from big channels over excellence from little channels I’m
constantly constantly battling that and it’s just it’s a war of attrition the
only way to succumb that is to produce things that are just totally
off-the-wall and get crazy clicks like usually clickbait let’s be real or just
battle of attrition just putting out tons and tons of content until you have
enough momentum to have a snowball effect it’s a really tough battle to be
facing on my channel I have made it a point to try and respond to almost every
single comment so I think that’s actually a worthy cause to stay very
involved with my viewers and response all these comments generally speaking I
try my best to answer every sin comment which means I pretty much read every
single comment which also means I see all the bullshit that people say about
me being a youtuber sucks so bad because
everything I do is criticized it matter what I do I will be criticized in
every single video I have produced some will say something bad about me not
always about the content sometimes it’s just about me as you can imagine there
are a lot of terrible people out there they will find any reason to shit on you
it doesn’t matter what it is it could be something about me physically use your
imagination I’m sure you can think of what they’re saying be a good adult and
don’t actually say it or type it that’s the difference between you not being a
monkey and the monkey shitting and type on the keyboard so you’re constantly
being just told awful awful things people can be just so brutally bad it’s
mind-numbing how stupid and terrible these people can
be I read this stuff and just think wow I bet your mother is really disappointed
in you it’s hard to even fathom that people think and behave this way you
would never act this way if you were meeting me face-to-face like the things
that people say in comments if they met me in person would never ever say that
in the course you knows right now if someone’s a be a your I would know you
wouldn’t you wouldn’t because you’re a reasonable human being just when you’re
hiding behind a keyboard you’re not imagine that you’re seeing there at your
job every single day someone’s filming most of your job and then they take the
worst and best moments of that day and condense it down into a video and
publish it for tens of thousands of people if not hundreds of thousands of
people to review which means those people are gonna criticize and discuss
everything about it yeah that’s what it’s like being a youtuber so every
single day my life gets documented and every one cat eats and criticizes
everything I do and oh boy everyone wants their opinion to be heard
the converse of that is there are some amazingly awesome people out there who
say some absolutely fantastic things and it really restores your faith in
humanity’s the good news is the number of positive comments far exceeds the
number of negative comments but you still have to see those negative
comments I’ve made it my policy that when people are just straight-up trolls
i just banned them because they’re not being productive they’re not helping
they’re not doing anything positive and yeah maybe I could get more views if I
dealt with that a different way but I just don’t see the point I don’t want to
reward people for being assholes to me it’s just not
the way to do life and the other thing that comes with everyone watching your
videos and watching basically your life is that everyone has suggestions about
how to do it better it’s not that that’s not helpful sometimes there have been
amazing suggestions for my viewers and I’ve taken a lot of that advice when you
get told over and over how to do things better from people who don’t necessarily
have any insights into how to actually do it for example I get told all the
time how to get more views and subscribers for my channel from people
who don’t have a youtube channel so it’s like well how do you really know this
it’s never that easy it’s never as simple as it seems I can’t tell you the
number people have just said just go do a collab it doesn’t work like that I
can’t just go call up a channel that’s got a million subscribers be like hey we
should hang out no they don’t want to talk to you they they’re too busy doing
their own thing it has to be a bit of quid pro quo I have to be able to offer
something for them in order for them to want me on a channel it has to be
beneficial for them to spend their time with a small youtuber for them to want
to do it so unless I can provide that they’re not really interested in let’s
be real at the size of my channel I can’t bring that much a table yet I
can’t say oh you’re gonna get a ton of views from this video because it’s
probably not true so just to be clear I’m not saying don’t offer suggestions I
know please do like I said there have been amazing suggestions as many of
which I’ve done and change the channel to do things that are better because of
that so I appreciate that I’m just saying it’s really frustrating
like I mentioned imagines someone criticizing your job telling you how to
do it better every single day of your life and you’re getting it from
literally thousands of people that’s what I have to deal with it sucks all
that being said would I change the situation what I want to go back to
software no absolutely not I truly enjoy this job I enjoy it more than I could
possibly explain and I know people say oh it looks like you’re not enjoying
your job you’re always complaining about things
no like you got understand that’s part of the strategy of being YouTube people
want to watch negative things things were you bitching about stuff I’ve tried
making videos that are very positive and uplifting and people don’t really watch
it they want to watch the negativity because people like to see failure they
like to see bad things happen it’s like watching a train wreck
if you do something positive yeah you know feel good for a few minutes but you
might not want to watch it over and over so I’ve tried that it’s it’s harder to
do positive videos I enjoy them more I would prefer to do it more but it
doesn’t necessarily get the views and it’s not necessarily advantageous for
the growth of my channel well hopefully you appreciate some of those insights
again into what it’s like being a youtuber so besides all the car stuff
every once a while as you know I like to do some stuff about the business side of
it or telling you the truth about all this whole craziness I mean this as you
know not my career path of choice it just kind of happened especially as I’m
an introverted person by nature so this has been a very hard journey for me like
to stand here and fill myself it’s taken a long time for me to be even remotely
comfortable and I’m finally kind of getting okay at it but geez that’s just
not my nature I don’t I’m not one to seek attention I don’t like it but it’s
a necessary thing for what I’m trying to do I’m more interested actually the
actual car stuff than necessarily the talking to a camera part it’s been
strange but I enjoy it I really do and hopefully we’ll keep growing and have
enough success to continue to do this who knows we will see what the future
beholds for this channel I do appreciate you guys for watching it so thank you
thank you so much without you guys’s subscriptions and views this whole thing
wouldn’t work thank you again I do appreciate it if I
haven’t already hit 50,000 subscribers you can win that clock by sign up to my
email list or buying any of my merch you can do so at normal guys supercar calm
or if you sign up as a member of my channel any of those three things once I
hit 50,000 subscribers I’m picking a name at random that person is gonna win
that cool clock on the wall check out my website if you have a super card is for
sale or if you’re looking for a super car again you can list your car for sale
for free or go browse other cars I have listed I’m also gonna be doing some
videos talking about the Ferrari marketplace and the supercar marketplace
as a whole we even have some more car reviews coming up so you’re gonna want
stay tuned for like cool stuff we have a ton of cool car stuff coming your way
it’s going to be sweet

Do I have to pay to join this channel to win the clock. I enjoy your different style to how you operate your Channel. Unfortunately I just cannot afford to pay to join these channels. I just plainly subscribe do the channels that appeal to me. With your Channel, the drama free content keeps me returning. Especially thanks just leaving politics alone that is why the watch so little TV. I am just a lowly electrician and hope I can join the supercar owning experience soon my daughter and I Bond over special and supercars. Keep doing what you enjoy. Much love from Birmingham Alabama. Dan, you rock and I love your channel. I came for the technical content and Ferraris. Now I'm here for Meg, your friends and all of your adventures together. I'm a software dev for now but one day I want to open my own auto shop and live the dream. Keep doing what you love. Next time I'm at Cars and Coffee I'll have to say hi.

My experience is with 32 You Tube videos. Your right about the "better videos" There's a 1000 ways to skin a cat. And the hours of editing. But you never mentioned about the services you provide and the merchandise you sell by having these videos. I hope it's a branding thing for better things to come Keep it up…

All I can say is that people that post ridiculous things to offend you as a person are clearly people with serious psychological issues. God bless them. And yes please ban them…

Perspective: many of your viewers don't take home $2000/mo.
Also perspective: most of your viewers don't/won't ever own a Ferrari.
Yeah, it's not YT rich, but $2k/mo. is survivable money for a lot of lower middle class families.
Just something to think about when you own a car that would buy 1-2 houses for those same viewers.

Quit whining about being criticized! No I'm just kidding – I love your channel, a lot because the size, and the realness of your content. If I had the devotion to spend endless hours video editing, and if I seemed interesting on camera, I'd have a channel myself. I have the cars and the projects, but the hard part is the work nobody ever sees on camera!

Hello Dan, it seems to me it's all about entertaining your audience. I know it's a difficult task to come up with entertaining content 4 times a week. I know I couldn't! One question. How are Meg's numbers compared with yours? Her appearances on your channel are quite limited but to be honest I find her very entertaining. ( no offense). So keep up the good work and I'll keep watching.

Yes I know. Other youtubers were under the impression if a 16yo would possibly watch your channel that they could be affected. They were concerned if they had no "adult only content" that it would be affect them.

I'm very busy and don't see too many YouTube videos, but when I do, your videos are usually on top of my feed. This video was the very first when I opened YouTube right now! This is true even when I subscribe to the big guys like Doug DeMuro. I'm a new subscriber from Puerto Rico and have only seen like 30 of your videos, but have enjoyed every single one and subscribed on the very first one. Keep doing what you're doing because it is what makes you unique and will eventually get u a million plus subscribers like me who enjoy unique and quality content!

Now that I’m off from work, I’ll explain another reason why I’m not YouTuber Material. Dan, I absolutely love your content. You’re a car guy sharing his passion and self-taught skills. I absolutely dig that. I find watching what you and other car YouTubers do to be relaxing after a long day. I do have wishes but I don’t have the skills to make that happen via YouTube, so I’ll have to make do with what I have. I grew up in San Antonio, but I’ve been places since I left in 2001, and now I’m in Charlotte. Last week we were hit by an EF-1 Tornado. We lost power for 51 hours. Damage all across the south end of town from Pineville all the way to Mint Hill. It came within 500 yards of the house. My immediate attention went to friends and coworkers. I would love to have a truck with certain modifications, not overly done, but I have a 2019 Hyundai Elantra. It’s not much, but I’ve upfitted it to do as much as a can with it including in times of emergencies. Part of my career in Security, I did an internship in Executive Protection in Las Vegas. For that I had to go through EVOC training. However, it would’ve been much more useful last week if I had a Gladiator or a Tacoma with a cargo management system, and tools onboard to assist in aiding with the problems we had with all the downed trees. At present I can only wish to be able to do that. Content like yours keeps me going in a way. Between sudden situations and having a sister that’s terminal, the wish of being able to assist in all of them is there, but sucks that there’s not much I can do at present. Thanks for listening brother.

Do the large channels release videos on certain days and times? If so, maybe release your content on their off days and maybe capture some of their subs when they are looking for new content?

Patreon!!!!!!! You have 50k subs. If you can get 2500 (5% of your subscribers) to throw you $5 a month on Patreon…thats 12 grand a month.
Im one of those that dont have a YouTube channel – but I have been planning one since 2010. The problem is that filming and editing is ALOT of work. I 100% believe you that its alot of work…but soon I am going to get my channel going (not this one…this is my personal account).
Im sure im going to learn alot when i finally do launch my channel.

Been watching you for a year or so Dan, but there is only so much you can do about a Ferrari . Your entire USP is the bit you are missing, the ordinary guy, That is the appeal, go skydiving, try golf, try surfing, etc. Do not bitch about super U tubers, most are crap and boring, I just picked up my new Wanker Supercar is outdated and to be honest, very boring. Your appeal is in the ordinary guy part, not the supercar. Move on. Regards

I think you revealed the secret. The younger audience consumes a lot of watch time on YouTube. Think about it, younger generation has phone in their hands 24/7. 12yr olds especially. They give a lot of big channels success and views. I know you want the older/mature group to watch but that wont happen to the level you want, yet*. Its a hard balance but listening to you talk on this episode, made me realize that its the young kids that really boost the channel analytics. Its hard but there’s a way. I cant wait till you reach 100k and then 1M. It’s gonna happen!

This reminded me of myself back in 2004/05 I was 14 yrs old watching Rob Ferretti and all sorts of car videos I could find. It influenced me so much and this is the life I wanted and achieved! I believe kids are going to look up to you like I did growing up. I dont think it would hurt if we target the younger audience every now and then to help this channel some more. What ya think?

  • Reply Juan Estevez February 13, 2020 at 12:24 am

Another issue; it gets really hard to watch a full video when YouTube interrupts 3 times (THREE TIMES!!), to play ads, otherwise love your channel, don’t give up.

  • Reply Nick Frost February 13, 2020 at 12:25 am

I'm a subscriber and love your channel, love the honesty and love the content. Keep kicking on with the channel as its getting better. I think every now and again go on a road trip with your good lady, off the beaten track and critique the vehicle along with wherever you go. Would be good to see the interaction between you both and you could do a video a day during the trip. Keep up the good work. All the best from the UK.

Great channel. I never understand why some vloggers start their vlog "Hey Youtube." I mean, last time I checked, a viewer is not youtube. YT is a website. It's just dumb and impersonal to start a vlog that way. Say Hey Viewers thanks for checking in or What's up to all of you, hope you're all well today. It's much more engaging to the audience and will make them more likely to return. I just can't stand vloggers starting off that way. It's like you're saying Hi to youtube executives, headquarters, or youtube employees, I don't get it.

    Thinking of content is tough.

    Maybe these will help

    1) meme review
    2) you brake you lose
    3) Ferrari give away, like Mr Beast
    4) Dan and Marzia's wedding highlights
    5) year-end review of Youtube automotive channels
    6) features… and quirks
    7) shitty comment reveal
    8) training your dog to commit a crime of hate in Scotland
    9) visit the Car Wizard every day.
    10) wave your arms around a lot, like you have wasps in your arm pits
    11) say "Dang" and "Dang, son" three dozen times in each video
    12) reaction videos of you reacting to Life of Palos reacting to videos
    13) feud with DDE
    14) begin every video in a hotel room, then go to Starbucks
    15) have Oscar fix everything . Don't allow him to speak.
    16) Meg and Pewdiepie's wedding highlights
    17) befriend very wealthy teenagers who own super cars
    18) applying make up in a Ferrari tutorial
    19) show up at a repair ship at 1am with the expectation things are fixed then and there
    20) repeatedly destroy your drive train. Do this in conjunction with #19.

Dan, you and your wife are terrific people and I really enjoy your videos. And you appear very comfortable on camera, so I never would've guessed you're introverted.

Still my favorite channel simply because of the personal passion. The big YouTube channels feel like watching network TV. This feels like I’m personally invited into your garage to experience the joy of cars with you which continues to motivate my joy in cars even when I feel a little less excited by it some days. I love the car reviews, Meg’s occasional videos, the behind the scenes stuff and the DIY (even though I’m a Viper guy and not a Ferrari guy). Basically all of it is great! 👏👏👏

Remember, it's not a job nor work when you're doing what you're passionate about!! And, if you've ever started your own business, there's nothing harder!! All of the people who say that you've got it easy, don't know their ass from a hole in ground!! On a lighter note, I'm lovin' the little video clips that you use to emphasize points you are referring to. Most (if not all) of the other don't have the film knowledge you have and therefore don't do. Keep those up!!

I have respect for any youtuber who can get monetized. Those putting out multiple videos a week is a lot of hard work.

All the behind the scenes problems we do not see.
I'm just starting a channel. Just figuring out the process make videos and get things to work.

Issues like no sound, record for an hour and camera shuts off after 20 minutes, mic will not work with gopro. Heater in pole barn goes out. Needs $150.00 controller. The problems never end.

You are doing a great job.
